Vocal Tone: The ‘Pure’ Tone
This is a tone that is devoid of any artificial style. Examples include a throat constriction to achieve a more bright sound or over darkening the tone to sound more musical theater-ish or operatic or rock or whatever. However, we must develop our natural tone first, which means no musical flair or style. No style whatsoever. So if your are a rock singer or a fan of Barry Manilow or Christina Aguilera or cari under wood or Barbra Streisand we want to leave out the stylistic nuances that may be artificially coloring the voice.
We want to develop our pure tone first which is for us as contemporary singers is again modeled after a relaxed speaking voice. The speaking voice when left without constriction is the model of what a pure tone should be. Interestingly, so many books that you may see that try to instruct us how to sing properly often have the same approach in the books title. It is very common to see a voice book called “discover your voice” or “learn how to control your voice.”
Whether consciously or unconsciously, these books all tend to be concerned with the same problems. That is, we as students of voice sometimes develop other singer’s tones and styles before we develop our own. This can be dangerous if not kept in check and is certainly not the correct attitude and approach to our own personal journey in discovering who we are as singers. We are all different and this can be seen very clearly when it comes to the human voice. Most of us have our own distinct sound to our speaking voice and it is my belief that this is what separates contemporary voice from the classical approach. If I were to line up 10 contemporary singers up in a row and had them sing I guarantee you that most of them if not all would have very distinguishable singing voice. But if the same experiment were to be given with 10 classical singers the difference becomes less noticeable. So many Classical singers are very difficult for the average listener to tell apart. This is due to the fact that this approach to signing is lees based around the natural speaking voice than contemporary is. Within seconds a child can hear a pop or rock singer singing on the radio and know exactly who it is. I would bet my last dollar that on average this is not true with even followers of this particular vocal style. And this is the very reason classical signing is so difficult to master because it is not based on the speaking voice, as is the contemporary approach. So therefore, we must leave out any hint of style or artificiality while developing our pure tone.
