Why is Irsay-Manning decision taking so long? (indystar)
Because the question keeps getting asked on a daily basis, we throw this out
there for fans who, like many of us in the media, don’t understand why a Colts
decision on the future of quarterback Peyton Manning has taken this much time.
As we all know, the deadline on this $28 million team option is March 8. Owner
Jim Irsay’s latest suggestion is he would be willing to keep Manning if
healthy and presuming the NFL’s only four-time MVP would restructure his
contract. What we know from Manning’s most recent comments is he intends to
play. He’s not planning on retiring. So, out of respect to everyone who keeps
asking the burning question about a decision most of us expect — yes, I still
think the Colts release Manning — I offer up theories that come to mind. 1.)
Irsay is putting off releasing Manning in hopes the QB will realize he should
retire. That’s not going to happen, but Irsay couldn’t be blamed for wanting
to take as much time as possible in case Manning has an epiphany and realizes
