How to Train a Golden Sheltie Puppy – Use the Right Mindset When Training a Sheltie
Training a Golden Sheltie can be challenging as well as rewarding. This article will discuss the right frame of mind that you need to be in when beginning to train your new Sheltie puppies.
To become the successful trainer you want to be, you have to step into the role of alpha leader. Make eye contact with your Sheltie. Do not look away, because that will be taken as a sign of weakness. The dog will look away. Once the dog looks down, that is an indication he or she is relinquishing the leadership role to you. You have gained the respect and confidence of the dog.
Now you need to gain the dog’s trust. This is something that you need to earn; it is not going to be handed to you. You need to create a positive environment and the interaction you have with the dog is crucial to this. Once all these pieces are in place, you will have an easy time to establish a training pace that is faster than you can ever expect.
You need to teach your Sheltie where the boundaries are. No matter how cute he or she looks, if the line has been crossed it is your job as alpha leader to bring him or her back. You don’t have to be cruel when you do this, but you have to be firm. There is nothing wrong with showing your dog love and affection; you just have to always keep the boundaries consistent.
Setting the rules, establishing the pack ranks and showing strong leadership is what dogs are biologically seeking. They know it is the key to survival. If you don’t provide these things, the dog may become scared, and then engage in behavior that not only crosses the boundaries, but may completely ruin any chance you have of being able to train your new puppy.
