Rubber Jelly
How exactly does oil rot rubber?
I know latex condom warnings say not to use baby oil, petroleum jelly, etc., but I can’t seem to find a chemical explanation.
Rubber polymer is a hydrocarbon. An old rule of thumb in chemistry is that “Like dissolves like” meaning that solvents that are chemically similar to solids will tend to dissolve them. Baby oil and petrolatum are aliphatic hydrocarbons. So, they will be readily absorbed by the rubber and swell it. This is not good if you are relying on it for protection since if it is swollen it could slip off. I don’t think either one will goopify the latex. (Goopify is a highly technical term that I just made up indicating the ability of a material to turn another material into a semi-liquid goop). But will ruin a condom for its intended purpose.
